Welcome to The Renaissance Festival in Crownsville, MD. I didn’t realize how much I missed this place. I had been a few times years ago, but it’s been a while. This time made me realize I was too young before to appreciate all it had to offer. We went on a Saturday morning. Tickets online were impossible to purchase. They said they would sell out quickly closer to the end of the festival which is on October 22nd. We decided to wing it and just head that way in hopes we could purchase at the door. We arrived with no traffic and saw a sign that said “Renaissance Festival” so we turned and got in line, but the pace was so slow we had to figure out what the hold up was. According to our GPS (waze app) the entrance to the event created a 21 minute delay. Yep, the line to enter the festival was 21 minutes long…you heard correctly. So our GPS gave us another route that put us ahead of the line by 11 minutes. I felt sorry for those who might have just been trying to get home that day. They directed us to park in the field. From there you could see all kinds of people in their festive garb as they walked towards the entrance. The lines to get in were long and yes some were intimidating, but they moved fast.
This years theme took place in 1527 and is the continued story of Henry VIII and his six wives. From the moment we entered there was never a dull moment. Literally if you chose to sit and people watch all day you would have a blast. A lot of the costumes we saw were incredible and well made. We know because we later visited a few of the shops and we were shocked by the quality as well as the price, but understandably so. It was so neat to see how everyone stayed in character. If you let your mind relax and wonder long enough, it felt as if you were living in those times. They did a spectacular job with that! Here you will find all kinds of shows, crafts, shops, games, food, and much more! We are already planning our costumes for next year since we didn’t wear any this time. Hopefully you will get the chance to enjoy this festival as much as we did.
